What to Expect During Nursing School

What to Expect During Nursing School

Nursing school can shock many students in the first days because their experience will be different from high school. It is even more complicated due to meeting new people and maybe living further from home for those attending on-campus classes. It takes time for many students to adjust because the activities are different from what students expect.

Things to Expect During Nursing School

These are realities that entrants to nursing school should expect.

Orientation is the first activity

Most nursing schools require students to begin with orientation before starting classes. It is during orientation that they will receive a student handbook that has information on classes, supplies, dress code and other school rules. The wise thing is to use the time before classes studying the manual because it is impossible to comprehend everything on the first day. Nursing school orientation also provides an opportunity for meeting other students. An introduction and making friends with classmates is essential as buddies are essential in the future.

Clinical rotations do not start immediately

Some nursing school might begin offering clinical rotations earlier, but most will not begin until the second semester. They decide to allow students time for settling into classes and rhythms or nursing school before the hectic although thrilling encounters with patients. Hands-on work is essential for students nurse, but the knowledge base and building confidence is vital before the students can fit into rotations. The first semester is still busy as students learn the basics and take the concept courses to learn the basics of the nursing profession in lecture format. This approach enables students to gain a firm foundation, learn medical terminology and learn how theory will apply to nurse practice. There will be much reading and memorization.

Much coursework workload

There is much to learn and read for an accelerated or regular BSN degree program as nursing requires expertise because nurses must know many things such as basic math, English, pharmacology, and anatomy. The intensity of subjects and workload can make nursing school to be very challenging but is worth the effort. Learning much as possible will make nursing to be a rewarding career.

It is important to create a personal timetable that space out the tasks to avoid overwhelming. Reading in nursing is impotent but it is essential to revise and study topics that lecturers teach because these are the areas where they get exam questions. A study group helps to increase motivation for studying and filling the knowledge gaps.

Clinical assignments

Clinical rotation and relating assignments for any nursing are almost always about hands-on aspects and skill development in the field. The clinical portion of coursework is the time for practicing direct patient-centered care and conducting specific laboratory work. Nursing schools at this time assign students to medical facilities for them to gain experience in caring for patients who need nursing and medical help. The students gain hands-on experience by going for clinical assign at various healthcare facilities including:

  • Hospitals
  • Community health centers
  • Hospice and long-term care facilities
  • Doctors' offices
  • Home care facilities

It is during a clinical assignment that students should expect to go for rotations, practice lab procedures, shadow medical care professionals in the department and engage in the essential role of patient care. The magnitude of class and practical work at this time can overwhelm the nurses. A prudent step is to write a list of must do and like to do tasks. Students will balance their responsibilities by tackling things in the order of priority and ticking complete work till the last. It is the time to forgo some optional activities like seeing friends or partying.

Graduation requirements the requirement for knowledge base and skills might vary between nursing school and degree, but the difference is minimal. The faculty approves graduation for those who past their exams and also demonstrate their ability to:

  • Design, manage and coordinate care
  • Practice professional holistic nursing
  • Apply knowledge from education (theory, sciences, research, and practice) to professional nursing practice
  • Communicate and collaborate with medical professionals, patients and families.
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills by utilizing critical thinking, ethics, and evidence-based practice
  • Use quality improvement and evidence-based practices to practice safe, appropriate, high-quality patient care.

One of the many things to expect during nursing school life is a busy schedule with much workload. A student should avoid trying to be perfectionists in everything or getting the highest grades all the time. They should instead focus growing knowledge, skill base and gaining clinical experience.

The most important thing at the time is to identify a unique thesis, write in the proper format and include the most current research for evidence. Writing incorrectly or missing the essential pieces will sabotage the arguments in the paper.

Steps to Writing an Evidence-Based Paper in Nursing

These steps are an essential part of writing a brilliant evidence-based nursing paper.

Identifying a fascinating topic and thesis

The first step is to determine the primary or controlling idea which is the groundwork for the entire paper. All other parts are mere extensions of the initial argument. It is imperative for the paper to have a clear thesis statement in the form of a concise statement in the first paragraph.

The arguments that the writer makes will be his choice, but the topic should be on something new. A topic on an evidence-based subject should focus on the typical clinical problems rather than an unusual manifestation or a rare disease. It should emphasize new information or research that has the potential to promote practical changes in the procedure. It can, for instance, be interesting to investigate evidence that supports new promising practices like reducing anxiety with music therapy, culturally sensitive approaches in asthma treatment and mindfulness training for the management of pain.

Although the writer has a choice on an argument, it must argue something with a clear statement and evidence for an in-depth defense.

Thorough investigation for supporting evidence

An evidence bases paper in nursing requires extensive research from print and online sources to get the most amazing facts to support the thesis statement.

The purpose of research is to gather evidence. The thesis statement should be the guide on the issues to argue in the paper. The analysis that someone should consider for an evidence-based paper should be from reliable sources. Research articles that instructors distribute and bibliography of textbooks are a good source of references. A search for reliable information should focus on the more legitimate web and peer-reviewed sources.

Primary sources with material relating to the topic and the university library are excellent places to gather information. Evidence bases medicine relies much on patient-centered clinical research including the efficacy of therapies and the diagnostic tests. Hypotheses or thesis for the evidence-based paper should build from the research findings. It should include all the strong recommendations with the backing of factual evidence from very trusted sources. Journals are excellent sources of material to use in an evidence-based paper in nursing because they publish articles after a review by experts in the field.

Writing the Evidence-Based Paper in Nursing

After gathering adequate research, it is time to write the body paragraphs after the thesis statement which is the last part of an introduction. The paper should be in the appropriate academic format such as APA. The outline of an evidence-based paper should have these sections:

  • Introduction
  • Methodology
  • Review or literature
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion
  • References

Each section should have the main idea in bullet points to make it simple to read. The main ideas should have evidence from research but stating them should be concise and clear to prevent ambiguity of the arguments. It should also include contradictory studies to the hypothesis for the discussion to cover both sides of arguments. It is essential to explain the reasons why this study could have produced differing results due to factors such as a limited scope or sample size during data collection. Modification of the hypothesis to account for newly discovered information might also be part of evidence-based paper but only when necessary.

Polishing the draft after completing all the sections of an evidence-based paper in nursing is an essential step before submitting the work. Editing the paper will help to find any errors in style and facts, format, citation list of references.

  • Select one of the stories presented in Chasing Zero: Winning the War on Healthcare Harm (Links to an external site.), and research additional background information as necessary.
  • Provide a summary of the story, the errors, and how those errors can be prevented.
  • What strategies can APNs employ to prevent errors and contribute to a culture of patient safety?
  • What challenges in the implementation of continuous quality improvement (CQI) have you observed in your own clinical practice?

Chasing Zero: Winning the war on Healthcare Harm is a documentary that  looks at the growing problem of medical errors will providing various ways and ideas  on how the risk could be reduced.  The documentary shows a list of medical errors and how these errors have on a family life as it also describes the way that the families have been affected.  Among the errors is the medical negligence when Dennis and Kimberly Quaid twins were accidentally given Heparin (1,000 times stronger) in the place of Hep-lock, fortunately for them it did not cause death to the lives of the twins (TMIT, 2012).  Also the other error was due to the fact that Heparin and Hep-lock were stored in a similar colored bottle and were also labelled the same way which made it difficult to know the difference (TMIT, 2012).

From watching the documentary it is evident that some of these errors can be avoided by APNs and promote the culture of patient safety. One of the ways includes improving the old system and processes of administering or labelling medication and coming up with new ones (TMIT, 2012).  For example having a checkbox list is one of the ways that resident surgeons can use to prevent errors. Also the barcode technology is among the safest ways to check for medication safety before administering it.

One of the challenges that I have observed in the implementation of continuous quality improvement during my clinical practice has been poor coordination between the various departments of patient care (TMIT, 2012).  There is also poor communication between nurses and the system of care which does may promote various medical errors.  It thus important for APNs to educate themselves about problems of patient safety and the potential solutions to improve care within their environment.
