Instructions: understanding a client’s rights is essential to being an informed patient advocate. in your role as a nurse, you will face situations that require you to determine mental capacity and what is a just and fair approach to treatment and support of a client. scenario you are a psychiatric nurse practicing in a state hospital system. a client is involuntarily admitted to the psychiatric unit and is restrained. consider the client’s rights in this situation. also consider the relationship of self-determinism to competence by differentiating clients who are competent to give consent and those who are incompetent when admitted involuntarily and restraints are used. instructions read the case scenario above. write a 2 – 3 page, double-spaced paper addressing the following points. discuss the nurse’s role with informed consent in the case of a client involuntarily admitted and restrained. how is involuntary status executed in a hospital environment? who is responsible for the decisions; who ultimately decides to commit the client? what are the time parameters for this process? define competency to consent to or refuse treatment and relate the definition to the self-determination act. follow apa style guidelines in constructing your paper, including a title page. use your own words in providing a response to the questions. support your answers with information from your textbook and/or other reliable, peer-reviewed sources (i.e., journal articles, textbooks, etc.). limit direct quotes from sources to no more than 1 or 2. the idea is to assess your understanding of the course material. be sure to cite your sources appropriately in the body of your paper and include an appropriate reference list in correct apa format.
