Instructions: this discussion focuses on practice and/or business practices. #1 george is a new nurse manager assigned to 4east, a medical-surgical unit. the unit has a long-standing reputation as a friendly unit with highly experienced staff who prides themselves on exemplary patient care and satisfaction. they have developed their own mission and value statement reflecting these standards and have it posted prominently in the nurses’ station. it is friday morning, and george has called a unit meeting at 8:00 am. he arrives at 7:30 am, and finds report is not yet over, several night shift employees have left, and some of the day shift employees are chatting socially. he starts the meeting promptly at 8:00 and is a little upset that not everyone is there. he begins the meeting with the words that, “value is what it’s all about. we have a responsibility to our organization – st. elsewhere and i expect total dedication to it. dedication and commitment to the organization is demonstrated by being on time for scheduled meetings and if you can’t be on time and committed to this unit and organization, you should request a transfer.” a month later, before the next scheduled meeting, george was reviewing patient satisfaction information. it was slightly lower than in previous months and a few more patient complaints and incident reports had occurred. more importantly, staff turnover had increased by 25%. when he asked at the unit meeting for an explanation of these reports, he was met with an uneasy silence. so what is going on here? what successes and challenges is george facing as a leader? what strategies might he consider?
