Immunosuppression occurs when there is a reduction in the immune system's activation or efficacy. This could either occur by the immune system itself, where a portion of the immune system has immunosuppressant activity on other parts, or as a result of external factors such as drug-induced or following radiotherapy, or due to infections targeting the immune cells such as HIV/AIDS (Brod, 2020). The immune system is a well-coordinated system that shuts down its system once the response is complete and the infection has been cleared. Autoimmune diseases occur when immunosuppression is lacking, and the immune system attacks itself (Brod, 2020). The drugs used to manage these diseases, therefore, target the immune system to lower their response so as o prevent attacks on the body's cells.
