NUR 545 PNUR 545 Population Health: Analysis and Evaluation week 9 Assignment

Week 9: The Role of Accreditation in Validating Population-Based Practice/Programs

The Role of Accreditation in Validating Population-Based Practice/Programs

At the end of the week, the student will be able to:

  • Identify a minimum of two governmental and non-governmental programs in their area.
  • Complete a gap analysis of their current practice.

Week 9 Discussion: "Muddy Points" of Gap Analysis

This week's discussion will take a different format--you will guide the discussion. Each student should list one topic from the chapter that remains to be a muddy point for them-is there something that's still not clear regarding accreditation? Please respond to two peers with information to help clear up the topic-perhaps you have experience with the particular accreditation, or maybe you can give first-hand experience of going through the accreditation to help your classmate understand.

Chapter 9 is straight forward and shows the importance of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to have knowledge of licensing and reimbursement requirements for accreditation.  Measurements, qualitative or quantitative, are necessary in validating quality of patient care and outcomes associated.  Reimbursement is becoming more based on patient quality outcomes, pay for performance (P4P) or value-based purchasing (VBP) (Cupp Curley, 2020), as opposed to unnecessary services performed.  Both federal and state requirements are important for APRNs to be aware of.  Nursing research and evidence-based practice should be incorporated into APRNs practice as in Magnet designation.

"Muddy Points"

  • What are the benefits of voluntary additional credentials after completing essential credentials?
  • Are there benefits of being accredited by multiple accrediting bodies with similar types of program criteria?
  • After CMS approval, why do institutions choose to be surveyed by private organizations versus public or ‘state-appointed’?
  • What is the best accreditation body for urgent care settings that accepts both private and public, government-run insurance, as there are many components involved in these types of facilities?
  • Although not specified, are DNPs the most qualified, with competencies, education, and experience, in a role for Magnet Program Director?
