APRN Characteristics

Advanced Practice Nurses (APRNs) function in various settings and roles and provide care to a diverse patient population. Despite this variability, the aspects of direct care offered are similar among APRNs (Hamric,  Spross, & Hanson, 2008). Two of the six characteristics that will impact my upcoming APRN practice are the use of evidence as a guide to practice and the formation of a therapeutic partnership with patients. Following is a detailed analysis of how I plan to use and apply the two attributes of direct care in my upcoming APRN practice.

The Use of Evidence as a Guide to Practice

Evidence-based practice uses the best available evidence to make informed decisions and provide patients with effective and efficient care based on scientific facts. According to Li, Cao, and Zhu (2019), systematic implementation of evidence improves patient outcomes and healthcare safety. Therefore, in my upcoming practice, I will apply evidence by searching healthcare databases for research related to my specialization area. I will also enhance my competence in appraising different types of studies and partner with experienced APRNs to enhance the adoption of evidence-based practice in the clinical setting.

The Formation of Therapeutic Partnership with Patients

Therapeutic interpersonal relationships are a crucial aspect in interacting with patients in the healthcare setting. These interactions enhance the establishment of positive relationships between patients and healthcare providers. Kornhaber et al. (2016) substantiate the claim that therapeutic interpersonal relationships enrich and transform patients’ experience. Thus, in my upcoming practice, I will form a therapeutic partnership with my patients by doing the following: encouraging patients to engage in the decision-making process and the design of their care plan, understanding the patients’ cultural beliefs and norms and their impact on care delivery, listening to and understanding non-communicative patient’s indirect voices, and advocating the patients’ concerns and views to others. Taking all these into consideration will enhance patient’s experience with the quality of care accessed.
