Communication as one of the 6Cs in Nursing

The 6Cs (care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment) offer nurses a set of shared values that promotes consistency across organizations, leadership, employees, and social care work.  The 6Cs ensure that service users and patients access the same and high-quality care (Baillie, 2015). Also, the 6Cs promote person-centered care to patients and service users. All 6Cs are significant in enhancing patient’s access to compassionate care. However, the focus of this presentation is on Communication. Nurses develop excellent personal relationships through excellent communication. For instance, nurses through effective communication can ask their patients’ queries with kindness and offer them information in a manner that is not scary rather display feelings of acceptance, interest, trust, and harmony, especially in today’s demographically diverse patient population

Communication is an integral part of enhancing team effectiveness and creating caring relationships in the healthcare setting.  Effective communication enhances patient’s access to compassionate care. Communication entails listening to what people are saying, informing the patient about what the nurse is doing, and ensuring that patients are informed about their progress (Collier, 2020). Communication also entails listening to and complying with the client’s wishes and acting upon them. For instance, nurses should not use treatment approaches that the patients have not consented to. Therefore, effective communication requires nurses to listen and adhere to patient’s decisions while considering their perspectives instead of dismissing them. Effective listening skills allow nurses to evaluate patients’ problem and situation, boosts the patient’s self-esteem and integrate the care process and nursing diagnosis at distinct levels of care (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). However, effective communication requires nurses to demonstrate sincerity, kindness and courtesy while caring for patients.
