Comparing the health care delivery system in the United States to that of Germany

Review International Health Care System Profiles

Compare the health care delivery system in the United States to one other country. Compare how disparities in health care delivery are addressed by each country’s system.

Based on your readings on this website and previous weeks, write a 1-paragraph summary on the role you have in addressing health concerns both locally and globally. Be specific regarding what specific action you will be prepared to take following the completion of your respective graduate program.

Note: Initial answers to the discussion question must be substantive and in the range of 150–300 words. Any references should be properly cited following APA formatting guidelines

Globally, healthcare policymakers are often faced with the mounting pressure of lowering the costs of care while at the same, improving the quality and safety of care. The US spends more on healthcare per person than any of the first world countries. However, healthcare disparities still exist. As a result, it may help to compare how disparities in health care delivery are addressed by the US and another healthcare system of a developed country like Germany.

In the US, the federal government addressed the issue of health care disparities through enacting the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, which is a shared responsibility between the federal government, employers, and citizens to ensure that all Americans can access affordable and high-quality health insurance (The Commonwealth Fund, 2020a). The ACA introduced Medicaid federal programs for adults older than 65 years and some individuals with disabilities. Besides, the US federal government regulates private insurance marketplace to ensure additional access to private insurance coverage, with income-based premium subsidies for low- and middle-income individuals. On the other hand, Germany addressed the disparities in healthcare by making health insurance mandatory for all citizens and permanent residents of Germany (The Commonwealth Fund, 2020b). The insurance is offered by two systems, which include “competing, not-for-profit, nongovernmental health insurance funds in the statutory health insurance (SHI) system and substitutive private health insurance (PHI).”

As a registered nurse, nationally I play the role of health promotion and disease prevention by acting as an educator in communities. As an educator, I play the role of eliminating health inequalities and attain equity in healthcare (Edmonson et al., 2017). Globally, I play the role of advocating for patients’ rights and the rights of my fellow nurses worldwide through increasing awareness as a global leader.
