Liability Issues In Nursing

Assignment: #7

  • Explore the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) website: http://www.ninr.nih.gov/ Review their publication Bringing science to life: NINR strategic plan (2011, p. 7) to identify the current priorities for nursing research. Do you agree with the priorities or would you recommend addition or elimination of some of the priorities? What effect do the nursing research priorities have on nursing researchers?
  • What criteria must be met in order to consider a practice, evidence-based? Provide examples. Explain the role quality plays in evidence-based practice?
  • Based on the information you’ve learned to this point, write a research proposal that relates to the topics you chose for a previous assignment. Be sure to include the following information in your proposal:
    • Hypothesis
    • Theory
    • Design model
    • Method
    • Anticipated results
    • Potential Dissemination Avenues

Part A: Exploring the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) Website

The Current Priorities

According to the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) (2011), the nation’s health problems are complicated, and there are no straightforward solutions. For instance, the NINR noted that chronic illnesses in particular accounts for 75 percent of health care costs in the United States and, in most cases related to disability and distress, and demands ongoing coordination of care with health care providers, and long-term self-management of illness. Therefore, the National Institute of Nursing Research (2011) maintains that sustaining research that supports good health across the lifespan and in various communities is the topmost priority. Other nursing research priorities include:

  • Enhancing health promotion and prevention of diseases.
  • Improving quality of life through managing symptoms of acute and chronic illnesses.
  • Enhancement of innovation in science and practice.
  • Improvement of palliative care and end-of-life care.
  • Development of the next generation of nurse scientists

Looking at the priorities, one would agree that they would help the nation to solve the current health care issues and improve the quality of life. Besides, they will ensure that future health care needs are taken care of by the development of the next generation of nurse scientists who will apply their innovativeness in practice. However, it is also recommended that NINR should prioritize on patient-centered care and genetics to combat the complicated health care problems.

Effect the Nursing Research Priorities Have on Nursing Researchers

The nursing research priorities have a significant impact on nursing researchers as they influence the nursing practice to meet the health care needs of the current and future generations. The priorities enable the nursing researchers to plan and review the strategic plans and research portfolio, including the current trends in health care and the likelihood of the current trends to impact the future direction in nursing research (National Institute of Nursing Research, 2011). Besides, the priorities enable the nurses to identify critical areas in which the nursing researchers can make a meaningful impact in the years to come.

Criteria must be met in Order to Consider a Practice, Evidence-Based

Evidence-based practice is an approach to solving problems utilized in clinical practices. For a practice to be considered as evidence-based, it must make the best conscientious and judicious usage of the current best evidence in addition to clinical expertise and patient values to help in the guidance of health care decisions (Dang & Dearholt, 2017). It may incorporate empirical evidence from randomized controlled trials; utilize information from case reports, scientific principles, as well as expert opinions (Grove & Gray, 2018). Most importantly, EBP must incorporate research evidence. An example of EBP includes keeping tidy the health care environment, putting on personal protective clothing, utilizing barrier precautions, and practicing the recommended hand-washing to control infections.

The Role Quality Plays in Evidence-Based Practice

The quality of health care defines the reliability and applicability of EBP. The need for quality care in EBP calls for the development of a model that entails concepts from scientific information on knowledge transfer, social marketing, social and organizational innovation, and change in behavior (Grove & Gray, 2018). Besides, the need for quality care calls for EP to provide the most effective and available care to enhance patients care.

Part B: Research Proposal

Topic: Physical Activity as an Intervention to Combat Obesity

Hypothesis: Increased physical activity would predict increased health levels, leading to weight loss.
Theory: This research will utilize Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory in designing an intervention that targets behavior change, such as the use of physical activity. This theory will promote the use of physical activity for obese individuals to maintain an active lifestyle.

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of physical activity in preventing obesity among adolescents.
Design model: This research will utilize longitudinal data and a dynamic panel model to discover how obesity affects children’s physical activity.
Method: This study utilized a dynamic panel model by using the Arellano-Bond method to assess the effect of BMI on physical activity (Zhang, 2017).
Anticipated results: It is expected that physical activity would reduce or prevent obesity.
Potential Dissemination Avenues: The dissemination can be done through seminars, press conference, radio and television coverage and public forums to educate the participants about the importance of maintaining good physical activity to prevent or eliminate obesity.
