Reflecting On My Personal Philosophy of Nursing

Since my start of the RN BSN program, my attitude and practice as a nurse have considerably changed because of the opportunities available for nurses with advanced education.  For instance, healthcare employers and hospitals are looking for qualified individuals to meet the increasing patient demands. Having a BSN degree opens opportunities to nursing leadership and patient care. The program also prepares nurses to pursue doctoral and master’s degree in nursing, either in nursing education, research, and areas of care. Therefore, my two-five-10 year goals are to complete my BSN and enroll in a Master’s degree program to be acknowledged as a qualified and competent nurse. My goal is also to work in the clinical setting as a nurse practitioner, gain adequate knowledge and experience, and eventually become a nurse educator and leader to influence healthcare policy and nursing curriculum. 

In today’s competitive world, earning a master’s degree will help me move up my career ladder. Other opportunities include pay increases, teaching opportunities, advanced knowledge, and leadership opportunities. As a nurse, I now understand that the highest–paying post mandates nurse to have a master’s or doctoral degree.  Accordingly, the advanced degree will make me a qualified nurse practitioner and allow me to educate the next generation of nurses. Nursing faculty shortage increases demand for nurse educators. Thus, with my master’s degree, I will take advantage of the opportunities in the nursing education sector because of the faculty shortage. I can also assume a leadership position in the healthcare setting while guiding other nurses.

 My career plan has changed over the years because of the shift in demand for nurses with advanced education to meet the diverse needs of the patient population. Initially, I thought having a BSN degree was enough, but I have realized that advancing my education is necessary to take advantage of the opportunities in the nursing profession. I now focus on developing my critical thinking skills, leadership skills, clinical reasoning skills, research skills, health promotion, and case management skills to increase my job prospects and prepare myself for the master’s degree program.

How I have changed or expanded My Philosophy of Nursing Since I started my RN-BSN Program

When I started my RN-BSN program, my philosophy of nursing was to enhance patient access to optimal, compassionate, empathetic, and culturally competent care. Healthcare disparities are attributable to a lack of cultural awareness among nurses contributing to stereotypes and bias in care delivery. However, providing care that reflects the patient’s linguistic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is necessary to optimize patient outcomes. However, my philosophy has expanded since I started my RN BSN program. I have realized the importance of technology in enhancing care delivery and the need for policy reforms to address the inadequacies in the United States healthcare system. Thus, my nursing philosophy has expanded to include updating myself regarding new technologies in the healthcare sector and contributing to healthcare reform to boost patient outcomes. 

The RN-BSN program has influenced the expansion of my nursing philosophy. Through the program, I have realized the need to apply critical thinking, critical reasoning, and leadership skills to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving healthcare sector and boost patient outcomes. The RN-BSN program emphasizes training in administrative and managerial roles, and I am looking forward to a leadership position in the healthcare setting.

Whether I would describe myself as a Lifelong Learner

As an active process, lifelong learning allows students to search for knowledge and utilize it to realize their lifetime or professional goals. Lifelong learning entails non-official and official learning and self-directed learning (Kaplan, 2017; Qalehsari, Khaghanizadeh,  & Ebadi, 2017). The rapid changes in the healthcare sector compel me to constantly evolve to meet the needs of the diverse patient population. In this context, lifelong learning is necessary to update oneself with world changes while sustaining intellectual and occupational development. I can consider myself a lifelong learner for various reasons. For instance, I have developed good reading habits, set goals to meet as a student and a professional nurse, seek resources to expand my knowledge. I also interact with like-minded learners. By setting goals, I commit to my studying by highlighting what I should achieve at the end of the course, including a plan on how to meet those goals. I often reward myself for achieving my target goals, such as understanding a concept and finishing assignments on time.  

I have also developed good reading habits because, in my free time, I read nursing articles and journals to update myself with changes in the healthcare sector. I do not limit myself to studying course materials. On the contrary, I also read about worldly experiences, cultures, and their influence on care delivery. I access some of these resources online, at the university and the local library. I also use online sites to identify individual with whom we share the same experiences. Sometimes, I volunteer at the community healthcare settings to meet new people while providing care to those in need. Through lifelong learning, I have realized that nursing is an evolving profession. I update myself through extensive reading to ensure I am adequately prepared to meet the needs of an aging and diverse patient population. Thus, I will always read nursing articles and Journals and search for  resources online to enhance my competitiveness as a nurse.
