Patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomized from outpatient and inpatient wards. Inclusion criteria included females or males between 18 and 65 years, at least a single treatment before the study, and a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (Zhang & Chu, 2018). Exclusion criteria in the study were patients with gestational diabetes and those with type 1 diabetes mellitus, patients who had declined to be included in the study, those with less than 2 years life expectancy, and those who participated in trials. Zhang and Chu (2018) carried out a randomized study and included a control group of Chinese patients living with T2DM in Nanjin. 998 eligible patients were randomized with 498 patients in the systematic health education group and 500 patients to conventional group. The outcomes of the study were measured by body mass index (BMI), glycated hemoglobin A1c (Hb1c), blood pressure, and lipids during the period of follow-ups that lasted 2 years. The authors found that the group randomized to systematic health education model showed a significant variation in systolic blood pressure (SBP), LDL cholesterol, and HbA1c (P<0.05) (Zhang & Chu, 2018). However, during patient enrollment, the Zhang and Chu (2018) used mobile devices, and this had the potential to limit generalizability. Most of the recruited patients were young because of such limitation of older adults using mobile devices. While the systematic health education model was shown to be successful in improving patient outcomes, the study does not reflect the results in general population that includes both young and older patients.
