Roles in Advanced Practical Nurse

Advanced Practical Nurses (APNs) include different healthcare professionals such as NPs (Nurse Practitioners), midwives, anesthetists, and other clinical specialists. APNs have advanced professional training and certification such as masters or doctorate degrees in nursing specialty (Bryant-Lukosius et al., 2017). APNs must satisfy the advanced educational and clinical practice requirements. Other essential competencies of the Advanced Practice Nurses include research skills, evidence-based practice skills, clinical and professional leadership capabilities, teamwork, and ethical leadership.

In essence, Advanced Practical Nurses play a critical role in the increasingly complex healthcare industry. They act as the primary care providers offering various preventive care services and related interventions (Woo, Lee, & San Tam, 2017). They can also administer medication, manage nursing departments, diagnose and treat different clinical conditions. The advanced or additional training of the APNs means that they can work in healthcare settings with a higher level of responsibility (Bryant-Lukosius et al., 2017). They offer primary and specialty healthcare services across different clinical settings. For instance, Nurse Practitioners primarily work in outpatient settings, offering preventive care and regular medical checkups.

Additionally, Certified Nurse-Midwives work in prenatal care environments ensuring the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies. Nurse Anesthetists majorly work in surgical operating environments, offering critical care to patients during and after surgical procedures such as anesthesia and pain management services (Woo, Lee, & San Tam, 2017). Finally, Clinical Nurse Specialists’ roles include making hospital rounds and conducting critical diagnostic and related clinical decisions. They also ensure effective implementation of best practices and evidence-based care to improve patients’ conditions and clinical outcomes.

Notably, Advanced Practical Nurses enjoy a higher level of autonomy and can make independent professional decisions about prescription medications and other treatment processes. They can conduct extensive physical examinations, interpret laboratory and diagnostic results, evaluate patients’ responses to care, offer counseling and education, and arrange referrals for specialized care (Woo, Lee, & San Tam, 2017). Therefore, healthcare entities should recognize the critical roles of Advanced Practical Nurses in enhancing patient satisfaction and holistic wellbeing.
