Horizontal violence refers to any harmful, aggressive, and hostile behavior towards a group of nurses or a co-worker via words, actions, attitudes, or other behaviors. According to Taylor (2016), researchers featured horizontal violence in nursing literature over 30 years ago. The literature describes it as a persistent and significant work-related threat within the worldwide nursing workforce. Horizontal violence remains an issue within the nursing profession despite the design of interventions and expanding body of literature to handle its related behaviors. Furthermore, the lack of agreement regarding the vice definition makes it difficult to understand its prevalence in the nursing profession (Taylor, 2016; Rainford, 2015). Similarly, horizontal violence might be so deep-rooted in the nursing culture, making it challenging for staff to know when they experience or witness it. Additionally, work violence policies require nurses to report co-workers that show horizontal-violence-related behaviors. Since nurses do not recognize the vice when they witness or experience it, it makes workplace intervention challenging. Thus, horizontal violence is an issue in the clinical environment.

How the Nurse Mentor Can Promote Professional Socialization in the Workplace

Professional socialization supports and improves positive teamwork by reducing negative attitudes among nurses. Professional socialism also promotes values that enhance the provision f compassionate care. Nurse mentors can promote professional socialization by monitoring and encouraging vigorous mentoring approaches for experienced and novice staff members (Bellucci & Shakeeka Misher, n.d). For instance, nurse mentors can utilize debriefing, journaling, coaching, reflective exercises, and role-play mentoring strategies to ensure novice nurses self-actualize themselves in the new work setting. The strategies also boost nurses’ confidence and improve open communication and collaboration.
