Implementing Clinical Guidelines

The XYZ hospital is a 200-bed hospital and serves a community population of more than 60,000 as well as an extensive rural region around it. In the recent days, the hospital has been experiencing a significant increase in malpractice premiums, particularly those attributed anesthesiology incidences. In response to this issue, the chief of medical staff in collaboration with the anesthesiology team joined hands to learn more about the implementation guidelines of the American Society for Anesthesiology (ASA) related to different types of anesthesia care (Beauchemin, Cohn & Shelton, 2019).  After evaluating and discovering that the ASA implementation guidelines have been widely accepted throughout the United States hospitals and were particularly perceived favorable by malpractice providers, the chief of staff lobbied for their implementation as an attempt to enhance the quality of care and to assure stakeholders that the facility has lower anesthesiology malpractice premiums (Boulet, Murray & Warner, 2017).  Despite the fact in the past, most healthcare professionals in the facility had expressed lack of enthusiasm in relation to the ASA practice guidelines and implementation, the current case was different given that all the medical staff unanimously agreed to employ the ASA anesthesiology practice and implantation guidelines.

The chief of staff in coordination with the medical staff appointed a sub-committee that would work cordially with the hospital management on complex issues connected to the identification and development of institutional procedures as well as the training programs. Moreover, another sub-committee was selected to conduct a unique fund-raising efforts to raise the funds needed to purchase the appropriate resources needed to implement the ASA guidelines in the facility (Beauchemin, Cohn & Shelton, 2019).  Previously, XYZ hospital relied on the review and quality assurance departments, whose operations were primarily based retrospective evaluation of patient’s sample charts and which were judged against common generic assessments. However, combining the tradition and the new ASA guidelines, the facility hopes to demonstrate a decline in the rate of negative anesthesiology-related incidences (Boulet, Murray & Warner, 2017).
