Whether I Would Consider a Career in the Guest Speaker’s Field? Why or Why Not?

The guest speaker specializes in forensic nursing. Forensic nurses are Advanced Practice or Registered nurses with training and education to offer specialized care to individuals experiencing long-term and acute health outcomes caused by violence or victimization.  Additionally, they offer testimony and consultation for criminal and civil proceedings based on their evidence collection and findings. I can consider a career in forensic nursing because of its role in helping victims of sexual assault and domestic violence find justice and overcome the trauma caused by the incidents. Also, the vices have a considerable impact on society and the healthcare sector. For instance, sexual assaults impact society’s economy due to reduced productivity.  Sexual assault or domestic violence disrupts the victim in significant ways.  The victim may require time off from work, contribute to job loss, undermine individual performance, or renders individuals incapable of offering services. 

The healthcare sector also bears the financial burden of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, including providing therapeutic services and collecting evidence to ensure perpetrators are caught and imprisoned for their offenses. Thus, as a forensic nurse I will prevent the vice from happening and supporting victims to ensure they lead quality and fulfilling life. I will also focus on preventing further violence and injury by enhancing victim’s access to necessary care and support and criminal justice resolution. Accordingly, I will promote public education on the importance of reporting violence and sexual assault because they remain the most underreported crimes. Additionally, I will collaborate with other healthcare providers to design sexual assault and domestic violence prevention programs to ensure that the vices are kept under control and individuals report them.

What I took from the Presentation to Incorporate into My Clinical Practice

I found the presentation information regarding the handling of victims of sexual assault in the clinical setting beneficial. As nurses, we should not appear as investigators while handling victims of sexual assault. On the contrary, we should show them support, compassion, and empathy while empowering them to control themselves. I also learned about reporting options. For instance, the reporting of sexual assault can occur immediately after examination or before the victim arrives at the facility. However, some victims may choose not to report the incident because they are not sure how the incident happened, b they were intoxicated when the assault happened, while others may fear retaliation from the perpetrator. Therefore, obtaining informed consent from the victim of sexual assault or domestic violence is necessary before reporting the matter to the police.  

The guest speaker also insisted on the importance of treating a sexual assault victim’s body like a scene of a crime. Thus, it needs to be preserved to collect more evidence as possible.  For instance, vaginal swabs can help identity if samples’ DNA matches with the suspect. In this context, it is necessary to inquire from the victim of sexual assault what happened before and after assault because it is normal for people to wash themselves thoroughly after a sexual assault.  Even if the client washed herself, a vaginal swab is paramount to collect some form of evidence. For individuals who do not wish to report their assault, their evidence should be kept for one year before they are destroyed because they may change their minds.  I will integrate this information into my clinical practice.
